West, with Venture Crew 333 recognized with National Award of Merit
Leah West, with Venture Crew 333, has been recognized with the prestigious National Award of Merit following her courageous and selfless actions during a life-threatening emergency this past summer at Philmont Scout Ranch.
While attending the renowned high-adventure base, Leah and her fellow scouts found themselves in an unexpected and critical situation during an evening outing. A man nearby was in severe distress, and another scout had already begun administering CPR. Without hesitation, Leah and others stepped forward, working together under pressure to provide aid and support in a moment where every second mattered.
Their quick thinking, composure, and willingness to act exemplified the highest ideals of Scouting. Faced with a real-world emergency, these young individuals demonstrated not only preparedness, but also remarkable leadership and compassion.
The National Award of Merit is given to Scouts who perform exceptional acts of service of an uncommon character, reflecting both skill and bravery. Leah’s actions, alongside those of her fellow scouts, serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that training, teamwork, and character can have in moments of crisis.
This recognition highlights the core values that Scouting strives to instill—being prepared, helping others at all times, and rising to the occasion when leadership is needed most.
Leah’s story is an inspiring example of young people putting the Scout Oath and Law into action. Her community, leaders, and fellow scouts could not be more proud of her achievement and the difference she made when it mattered most.
