Staycation trend is Perfect for Scott County – Part II

While last week’s tour of the Big South Fork focused on rugged backcountry trails for a local staycation, you do not have to venture deep into the wilderness to find a memorable local summer escape. As seasonal temperatures climb and travel costs make long-distance road trips less appealing, local recreation areas provide a perfect alternative. Fortunately, Scott County features several community hubs and traditions that allow residents and visitors to enjoy a refreshing getaway close to home, including the Huntsville public pool, Oneida City Park, and the annual Firemen’s Fourth.
To beat the scorching summer heat, locals can dive into the waters of the Huntsville public pool. Located right in the heart of the county seat, this community landmark has served as the ultimate cooling-off spot for Scott County families. The pool remains an essential staycation destination because it strips away the high cost and stress of commercial water parks. Instead, it offers pure, classic community fun where children can safely splash and families can lounge. It serves as a vital hub for seasonal gatherings, such as the annual free community pool party sponsored by the Scott County Chamber of Commerce and can be rented for personal pool parties. Whether you want to swim laps or relax by the pool, this location delivers a budget-friendly day of vacation vibes.
Just a short drive away, staycationers can experience recreation and local culture at the scenic, 60-acre Oneida City Park. Anchored by a 34-acre stocked lake, visitors can fish, launch a boat, or stroll along the paved walking trails. The park truly shines during seasonal events, hosting a yearly car show, vibrant Farmers Market, and staging music performances at its open-air amphitheater. Oneida City Park features gazebos and picnic tables throughout, as well as multiple playground areas for the children. The park also features a splash pad for those who want to cool off from the summer sun.
For a completely different seasonal thrill, residents can look forward to the Firemen’s Fourth festival on the Courthouse Mall in downtown Huntsville which is held every Fourth of July. Hosted by Huntsville Fire and Rescue, this historic event features local food vendors, crafts, and live entertainment. The celebration culminates on Independence Day with a classic hometown parade and a spectacular, choreographed fireworks display after dark.
From refreshing waters, to booming community festivals, Scott County proves you do not have to travel far from home to find a great adventure.
