The Renaissance Comes to Oneida
By Shane Gilreath

An exciting addition to the history of Oneida City Park will take us back a few centuries. The Oneida Renaissance Faire is set to time travel back to the days of Shakespeare, Columbus, and Michelangelo. The event will fall under the endless imagination of local business owner Moe Mullis, proprietor of The Black Cat on Main Street. Taking place on April 18th –19th, The Renaissance Faire will transform the park into a lively celebration of Renaissance and Medieval culture, promising family-friendly entertainment, including live performances, games, artisans, food trucks, costume contests, and vendors from across the region. Organizers say attendees can expect to see some of the best renaissance cosplayers and craftspeople “from all around the lands,” adding to the immersive atmosphere of the Oneida event.
In this, Oneida will not be alone. Renaissance festivals have grown steadily in popularity across the United States over the past several decades, blending historical inspiration with theatrical fun and wit. While not always strictly accurate, these events draw loosely from the European Renaissance period, and while you may not see Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, you’re promised a local offering of a mix of history, some folklore, and fantasy (without an argle-bargle amongst them, to use a touch of 16th Century phraseology). From handcrafted goods to instilling residential involvement and pride, they’ve proven a unique way for communities to engage with the past while supporting local artists and small businesses. This year, the Oneida festival will also serve as a charitable fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting Halos Home Animal Rescue. Vendors are encouraged to participate, with registration available through The Black Cat Antiques on Main Street in downtown Oneida.
“It’s exciting to see our community come alive with such a fun and growing mix of events for everyone to enjoy,” said Virginia Bruce, Community Development Coordinator for the town. “From the upcoming Renaissance Fair at Oneida City Park to the many other unique activities popping up around town, there’s truly something for everyone. This kind of energy not only brings neighbors together but also draws visitors to experience all the creativity and charm our area has to offer. I’m proud to see our community embracing new ideas and becoming an even more vibrant place to live and visit.”
With its scenic setting and wide array of arts and attractions, the Oneida Renaissance Faire hopes to become an annual standout in the town’s ever growing calendar of events.
