Sheriff, Detective Indicted

A shocking turn of events left Fentress County Sheriff Michael Reagon and former Detective Jerry Mifflin indicted Thursday on charges of tampering with government records, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
According to those statements, the investigation began in April following allegations of misconduct. TBI has revealed that in December 2024, Mifflin, acting on Reagon’s direction, fraudulently completed mandatory in-service training courses on the sheriff’s behalf. Those training credits are required to maintain compliance with the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Commission. The fraudulent credits, in turn, made Reagon eligible to receive a salary supplement.
In response to the indictment, Chief Deputy Hunter Fowler issued a public statement assuring Fentress County that the sheriff’s office will remain fully operational. “Our patrol operations, investigations, emergency response, corrections, and public safety services will all proceed as normal,” Fowler said.
Both Reagon and Mifflin have been booked and are expected to face judicial proceedings in connection with the charges. Mifflin is being held in the Fentress County Jail on a $10,000 bond. Reagon was released on his own recognizance.
No statements have been issued regarding the future of Reagon’s status as sheriff.
