The Oneida Middle School Indians have proven again that they’re the team to beat in East Tennessee middle school football. On Saturday at Campbell County, the Indians led a valiant comeback to defeat Wartburg Central Middle School 18 – 8 to capture their fourth consecutive TMSAA Area II Class AA Championship, a feat in and of itself. The TMSAA Area II Class AA division features some of the region’s toughest middle school programs. Oneida’s continued dominance of the division highlights the depth of talent that continues to fuel Scott County programs.
In a statement to SCN, Dr. Jeanny Phillips, Director of Oneida Schools, said, “Year after year, under the amazing leadership of Coach Terry, our middle school football program continues to shine brightly. I’m truly thankful for our coaching staff and players who always show such positive sportsmanship, and for our families who stand right beside them with love and support. Our entire district is beaming with pride.”
Meanwhile, the Scott Middle Highlanders also reached their championship game, coming up short against Midway. In some consolation, Scott’s Coach Gary Sexton was named Coach of the Year.
SCN congratulates the Highlanders and the Indians on incredible seasons, proving that Scott County grit, heart, and growth are unconquerable on the gridiron.
As the Oneida Police Department put it, “The future of sports in Scott County should be bright and exciting!” After four straight titles, few could argue with that. Saturday’s win was Oneida’s fourth straight and 13th overall TMSAA Area II Championship.
“We are so grateful for the heart, dedication, and true community spirit you’ve shown – qualities that make our students and staff so special,” Phillips said of the team. “A huge thank-you to our incredible players, coaches, and wonderful families who cheer us on week after week.”
