Cumberland Clear Organizes Community Cleanup

John Shockley, one of the founding members of Cumberland Clear, was instrumental in organizing the non-profit’s first community cleanup at Winfield Elementary.
Cumberland Clear, a local environmental and community-based non-profit, has announced a community cleanup event scheduled for Saturday, October 18th at 9AM at Winfield Elementary School. The school sits a football field’s length from a proposed rail transfer station, which has drawn the ire of the organization for its exposing children to potentially harmful waste.
“We want to take care of a few maintenance issues at the school and do a little bit of a cleanup and show them some love,” said John Shockley of Cumberland Clear. “We’ve got strength in numbers, and we know there’s a lot of folks who want to help—here’s our chance.”
The organization invites volunteers to gather to help them address small maintenance needs, clean up the school grounds, and plant trees as part of the organization’s broader effort to promote community involvement and environmental care. The event aims to foster a stronger sense of community pride and cooperation, a mission Cumberland Clear has spoken about since their inception earlier in the year after plans for the Roberta Phase II project came to light at a County Commission meeting in May. Since then, the group has become a passionate voice for environmental awareness and civic engagement throughout Scott County, appearing at government meetings, civic events, and organizing campaigns to promote the health and betterment of Scott County and the broader region.
By organizing hands-on initiatives like the Winfield Elementary cleanup, the organization hopes to continue expanding its reach and inspire residents to take part in preserving and improving their local surroundings.
Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate in the school project and help make a lasting impact on the entire neighborhood.
