Deputies Assaulted; two arrested in case of Campbell County Runaway
By Shane Gilreath
A confrontation in the pursuit of a runaway juvenile turned into a combative ordeal for the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office. According to statements from law enforcement, two sheriff’s deputies were assaulted on Friday following the search for the unnamed runaway.
According to a Campbell County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, deputies located the juvenile with two adult males on Ivey Hollow Road in Lafollette. Those adult males have been identified as Dalton Clear, 22, and John Garner, 57, who were both arrested on multiple charges.
The sheriff’s office said that following the arrest, Clear became belligerent and kicked the patrol car windows and headbutted the car’s cage. Clear’s behavior escalated until the deputies were required to request help from the LaFollette Police Department due to his aggressive behavior.
The two deputies were both reportedly assaulted during the incident, with one suffering a laceration to the head. When they arrived at the jail, Clear complained of head pain and was transported to the hospital for evaluation. He was later discharged to sheriff’s office custody. The deputy, too, was treated and released.
Clear and Garner were both arrested, and each are held on multiple charges. Garner was charged with disorderly conduct, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, harboring a runaway juvenile, public intoxication, and resisting arrest. Clear was charged with four counts of vandalism, two counts of aggravated assault on an officer, two counts of assault of an officer, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and resisting arrest.
The juvenile was transported to the Scott County Juvenile Center.
