Betty Ayers
November 24, 1939 – May 24, 2025

Betty Grace Miller Lay Ayers, age 85, departed this life at her home in Straight Fork, Tennessee, on May 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty lived a life of service – service to her family, to her church, to her students, and to countless others in the community. She leaves behind a life full of memories, which Alzheimer’s Disease so cruelly robbed her of during her last years with us.
Betty faced many trials in life, including the loss of two husbands, an infant son, and her memory. Throughout it all, she somehow managed to keep her faith, her smile, and her heart of service.
Betty began serving Christ at a young age and was a long time active member of Straight Fork Baptist Church. As Betty began to struggle with memory, her faith still stayed strong. When her children would ask where she put her keys she’d quickly respond, “I may have lost my car keys, but I’ll never lose the Keys to the Kingdom!”
She is likely remembered most fondly for her time serving students both in the lunch room and the classroom at Fairview Elementary, where she began working in 1985, when the school opened.
Betty was preceded in death by her first husband Roy “Buck” Lay, and her second husband W.C. “Bill” Ayers, infant son Roy Vaughn, father Rev. Richard and mother Lana Miller; siblings Joe (Jean), Vena (Fred), Maggie (Loren), Roger, Tom, Iris (Johnny), Jim, and Wanda (Bob); brother-in-law Segal; and daughter-in-law Star.
Betty leaves behind her daughters Janet (Larry) Austin, Jacquelyn “Jackie” (Eddie) Adkins, McKinley “Mack” Lay, and step-daughter Brenda Bolton; her grandchildren Casey (Courtney), Brittany (Matt), Laura Beth (Aaron), MacHaela (Ashley), and Jimmy (Amy); and several great-grand children; sister Lois and brother Mike (Vicky); sisters-in-law Pam, Alice, and Devonda; and, as one of 10 siblings, she also leaves behind a host of so many other special relatives and friends.
Betty had a special relationship with her great-grandson Luke, who thought the world of her. If Luke disappeared, he was down at Grandmother’s. He, Diane Wright, Shirley Duncan, and UT Hospice all became supportive caregivers who made it possible for Janet and Jackie to provide care for Betty at home during her last years with us.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 12:30 P.M. until time of funeral services to begin at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Four Oaks Funeral Home of Huntsville with Bro. Aaron Lloyd officiating. Music will be provided by her Grandchildren and Jakes Branch Church Choir. Burial will follow in the Lay Family Cemetery, 4124 Straight Fork Road, Pioneer, Tennessee, 37847.
You may share your memories and support with the Ayer’s Family on her tribute wall.
Four Oaks Funeral Home of Huntsville is honored to be serving the family of Betty Ayers.
