“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
(Part 3)
To the atheist and agnostic (one who is unsure of the existence of God or who believes that man cannot know if God exists or not) we might propose the following: If God exists and is God in the true sense of being eternal, almighty, infinite, creative, feeling, willing, and desiring, might He act, create, display His wonders simply for His own joy and glory? Yes, of course. This is exactly what the Holy Scriptures reveal to us that God indeed has done. This makes far more sense than unprovable theories of the universe self-creating without intelligence, matter, power, or design and of human life coming from a cosmic spark that somehow landed in a slime hole out of which crawled an amphibian, later to become a vine swinging ape, who then morphed into man capable of ordering a Big Mac meal deal. Christians, like our Lord Jesus, believe in the Genesis account of creation (see Matthew 19:4-6). Our reality begins, continues, and ends with God: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Christianity is utterly unique in the world. It gives us the absolute best explanation of the world into which we are born, and the realities which we face. Christianity also gives us the truth regarding how this present evil age will end and transition into the reign of Jesus over the entire earth from Jerusalem. God has given us truth. God has given us Himself. God has given us hope. But we must believe in order to receive. He who trusts in his own heart (mind) is a fool (Proverbs 28:26). You may recall that finally Maria (played by Julie Andrews) and Captain Von Trapp (played by Christopher Plummer) confess their love for one another. As author and former atheist Anthony Flew has written in There is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind (2007): Each (Maria and Captain Von Trapp) seems amazed to be loved by the other, and they wonder together how their love could have come about. But they seem confident it came from somewhere. In the lyrics of Richard Rodgers, they sing: Nothing comes from nothing, Nothing ever could.
