John Lee Welch, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at his home. He was born on October 11, 1944, to the late Archie and Bessie Welch in Oneida, TN. He was a highly skilled Tool and Die Maker working in the manufacturing industry.
A man of deep faith, John was a devoted member of the Southern Baptist community. His passions extended to the beauty and spirit of horses, a fondness poignantly underscored by his passing on this year’s Derby Day. Those who knew John will fondly remember him as a captivating storyteller, possessing an unparalleled knowledge of his family’s history and heritage.
He is preceded in death by his wife Verna Welch; son Ricky Welch; daughters Alecia Dotts and Dereatha Ramsey; along with his parents.
He is survived by his daughters Patricia Davis (James) of Indianapolis, IN, and Gwen Welch of Indianapolis, IN, and Bessie Smith (Paul) of Indianapolis, IN; son Richy Welch of Indianapolis, IN; sisters Violet Lashley of Charlestown, IN, Duretta Welch of Indianapolis, IN, and Patsy Welch of Charlestown, IN; grandchildren Destinny Welch, Jeremy Welch, Heater Willis, Tiffany Welch, Adam Davis, Elizabeth Messenger, and Haleigh Robertson; along with 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 4-8:00 p.m. at E.M. Coots’ Sons Funeral Home in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Local Arrangements will be:
Friends may visit with the Welch family on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of West-Murley Funeral Home with Minister Lee Spence officiating.
Music will be provided by Lee and Carol Spence
Burial will follow in the Love Chapel Cemetery in Robbins.
West-Murley Funeral Home is in charge of the local arrangements for John Lee Welch.
