“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
The well-known atheist Christopher Hitchens, dying of cancer, declared that there would be no death bed conversion to the Christianity he spent his life hating and attacking. In his #1 New York Times best seller god is not great, Hitchens writes that religion “wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos” and that this was “the original error” of religion. Jesus did not think so for He believed the Genesis account of creation. (see Matthew 19:4-6) If a person goes wrong at Genesis 1:1, he sentences himself to blunder through life and very likely condemns his soul through unbelief. If one will not believe in the reality of God the Creator, he, barring a miracle, will most assuredly be very disinclined and unwilling to believe in the incarnation of God’s Son as a man who gave his life as a ransom for sinners. C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) reminds us that Satan, with great skill, placed within the heads of Adam and Eve the idea that they could act as if they created themselves and thus could do what they wanted. The rest of the history of man on earth is one of money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery – the long terrible history of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy. Go wrong at Genesis 1:1 and you will never find the one prize all men seek: Happiness. The French philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) has written that “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes a least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.” Go wrong at Genesis 1:1 and you will never find the one prize all men seek: Happiness. So if we believe in God as the Almighty Creator, how much of His glory do we see in His creation? The heavens declare the glory of God and we should do the same.
