Cross remembered by Tennessee Senate
By Shane Gilreath
When Scott County lost Danny Cross, the community was left stunned. It was a loss felt by many, not only across the communities of Scott, but by government, faith-based, and community leaders from across Tennessee. The veteran pharmacist, who was 82, left in his passing a wake of philanthropy and service that few undertake. “Looking back at Scott County’s history, we are reminded of entrepreneurial pillars like Danny Cross, who established a strong foundation for our community” Stacey Swann, Executive Director of the Scott County Chamber of Commerce, said at the time. “Danny dedicated himself to the growth and development of Scott County and its residents. His commitment has had a lasting impact, fostering a stronger Scott County.”
The appreciation shown for Cross’ life of service had far-reaching tentacles that stretched into the state capital in Nashville. “It just came in the mail one day,” said Cross’ widow, Sarah. “It surprised me. I didn’t really expect it at all.” The surprise was from the Tennessee State Senate, who issued a proclamation to honor Cross’ life. The senate, led by State Senator Ken Yager, who signed the proclamation alongside Represenative Kelly Keisling and Randy McNall, Speaker of the Senate, joined their voices in unity with many across Scott County to remember Cross’ magnanimous philanthropic work and his unwavering belief in Scott County were fondly recalled by many across the area.
“It was very touching,” Sarah Cross said. “It brought tears to my eyes that anybody thought so much of Danny.”
Sarah Cross said she wanted Scott County to know – and those who sought to recognize Danny Cross – how grateful she was and how honored she was for Danny.
“First and foremost,” Sarah Cross said, who was four days shy of 29 years of marriage when her husband died in February, “Danny loved the Lord. He served as a choir director at Helenwood Baptist Church, he loved his family, and he loved me.”
The proclamation honors Cross’ memory, citing his impeccable character and his stalwart commitment to living life with courage and conviction.
“Danny Cross was an outstanding man and good business owner,” remembered Scott County Mayor Jerried Jeffers. “He had a heart of gold and did his best to help people in Scott County.”
