“Which of you convicts Me of sin?
And if I tell the truth why do you not believe Me? (John 8:46, NKJV)

Rev Dale Lee
General Ulysses Grant, dying of cancer, wrote his highly acclaimed Personal Memoirs, described by some as the greatest military memoir ever written. In them General Grant makes a remarkable admission. While serving in the United States army during the Mexican War, Grant observed several soldiers who were charged with the transport of equipment and supplies. They had obtained several Mexican mules who decided, after they had been loaded, to relocate their loads. This meant off their backs and onto the ground. This they did by several means, including rubbing against trees and running and kicking up hard. Grant writes, “I am not aware of ever having used a profane expletive in my life; but I would have the charity to excuse those who may have done so, if they were in charge of a train of Mexican pack mules at the time.” Indeed. Well, General Grant surely appears as a truly humble, non-vindictive man, praiseworthy and commendable for many things. And to never have used an expletive. Amazing. But as every true Christian knows, there is only One Who is truly above all others. The demon said to Jesus as recorded in Luke 4:34, “I know who You are – the Holy One of God.” Pilate’s wife sent word to him “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.” (Matthew 27:19) Pilate himself is on record as asking the murderous mob after they demanded to kill Jesus, “Why, what evil has He done?” (Matthew27:23) Pilate would also say “I find no fault in Him.” (John 19:6) The criminal dying slowly and in unbearable agony next to Jesus on a cross declared “this Man has done nothing wrong.” (Luke 23:41) And so Jesus asks each of us, “Who of you convicts Me of sin?” No one ever has or ever will. And if He is sinless, than Who is He? And if He is sinless, utterly unique, above all things, superior to every created being, perfectly pure, totally trustworthy, and the Holy One of God, shouldn’t we believe everything He says? And then go do it and thus glorify God? Surely this is why we are here.
