“Hallowed by Your Name.” (Matthew 6:9, NKJV)

Rev Dale Lee
God had blessed a young couple with two daughters a couple of years apart and so they decided to try to pray with them each night at bedtime. This prayer would be the appropriate ending of the day and the much needed beginning of the night season and new day tomorrow. The parents really tried to be faithful to pray with their children every night even if at times the prayer may have been slipped in during tv commercials. One night the oldest daughter declared she wanted to pray. She bowed her head and said “God, Jesus, God, Jesus, Amen.” The father quickly said this was a real good prayer, that she was talking to the right Persons. He thought that eventually we would try to add some verbs to the prayer. So ends this great introduction to our text. The word Jesus taught us to pray, “Hallowed,” is a verb. This is not a statement of praise to God but a strong request for God to act for Himself, for His Name, which means all He is, and in particular His goodness and glory. When we ask God to act for His glory watch out. He will always hear this prayer. In fact, Dr. J.I. Packer writes in Praying the Lord’s Prayer: “Jesus teaches us in prayer to start with God for He matters infinitely more than we do…this request is the biggest and most basic request of the whole prayer. Understand it and make it your own, and you have unlocked the secret of both prayer and life…This petition asks that the praise and honor of the God of the Bible, and of Him only, should be the issue of everything…Not unto us, O Lord, but to your name give glory (Psalm 115:1).” Do you pray sometimes with a heart moved by the greatness of God “Hallowed by Your name?” Go outside some clear night, look up into the heavens God made with just a word and say to God, right to Him, “Dear God, please hallow Your name in my life and in this world. What could matter more?” And thank You.
