“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Rev Dale Lee
If only it were that easy. C. S. Lewis wrote that after the death of his beloved wife Joy and her absence from his world, he now saw her everywhere. God, forever invisible and incomprehensible, demands that we seek and behold Him. God is everywhere but where to find Him is not so clear. Three observations may be in order at the beginning of another year. First, God is at the center of His purposes for this world, not us. Far too much preaching has man at the center not God. This simply will not work. God won’t allow it. Many get offended with God for lack of understanding of this most fundamental truth. God is the center of all, not us. Second, to quote Dr. Packer, “Rarely does this world look as if a beneficent Providence were running it. Rarely does it appear that there is a rational power behind it at all. Often what is worthless survives, while what is valuable perishes.” When God is needed most, as we see things, He may or may not show up. Ask Mary and Martha. We just don’t see things according to God’s purpose. As someone has said, we don’t see things as they are but as we are. Time to be still and know that He is God. Third, the cup God requires His children to drink in this life will not be filled with the “wonderful life now” wine. A wonderful life in its glorious fullness awaits us another day and in another world; we wait for a future sunrise and purified air and silver streams and healing trees. These are not yet ours. So we need to be still and know that God is God. And we will be eternally glad He is.
