Sgt. Jerry Hughes, American
Fighter – Korea
Sgt. Jerry Max, Hughes was born on January 9, 1935 in Fewflood Wood, Ohio to Native American parents, Ted and Edna Hughes. Unfortunately his mother died while giving birth to his twin siblings when he was five, leaving his father, Ted Hughes, who was blind at the time, with seven children and poor living conditions. Jerry went to school while working on his first job when he was 12 years old, working at a feed plant carrying the feed from place to place on his back. After he graduated high school, he was drafted into the United States Marines at age 18 or 19. When he was drafted his older brother joined the Marines. Sgt. Jerry Hughes was deployed to Korea after the fighting started there and was a platoon sergeant.
After serving in the Marines he went back to his home town, then moved to Florida in the 1970’s pumping gas at a local gas station. He then went to school at night taking classes learning how to be a mechanic. He became a mechanic and saved the money to purchase his own business, which thrived and was successful. After five years he moved to Scott County, Tennessee because of the ties that his wife had within the area where he found work in a local factory where he soon advanced in to a management position. He worked in this position for 18 years and retired.
Sgt. Jerry Max Hughes and his wife had five children and later in life he had a short battle with brain cancer and died on August 29, 2004 at the age of 69.
