“He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.” (Luke 1:32, NKJV)
How blessed we are to have this prophecy delivered by the mighty Angel Gabriel! Gabriel, whose name means “God is powerful,” is mentioned four times in Scripture and delivers words of the greatest importance. When Gabriel appears to Daniel in chapter 8 of his prophecy, Daniel falls into a paralyzing fear and is unable to stand (Daniel 8:15-17). In Luke’s Gospel Gabriel is sent by God to Nazareth to deliver a mighty announcement that surely will come to pass regarding the Lord Jesus Christ. God is going to give to His Son the throne of His father David. This throne will be in the present-day city of Jerusalem where David once sat. And now we gain some insight into why this city and the land of Israel is soaked in blood because of the many wars fought over them.
Satan’s kingdom is coming to an end though it will magnify itself greatly before Jesus destroys it by the appearance of His coming (see 2 Thessalonians 2:1-11). Author Daniel Gordis, in his excellent history of the modern state of Israel, writes that “it is essentially impossible to understand today’s world without understanding the Jewish state… and Israel has captured the world’s attention and figures centrally in the affairs of the world.” Why? Because God is going to give the Lord Jesus the throne of His father David in Jerusalem resulting in Satan’s kingdom termination. Satan knows and fears this. Thus hatred and violence and war are unleashed against Israel.
And some day even all Israel will be saved (Romans 11:26-27). Jesus will reign from Jerusalem and the nations will learn war no more (Isaiah 2:1-4). Until the day of the Lord begins with His glorious appearing, Israel will be the center of the great war in the spiritual realm. God always wins and some day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, all to the glory of the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11)
