Commission Approves Huntsville Playroom
By Shane Gilreath
A Special called County Commission meeting on June 2nd, County Commissioners voted unanimously to support the Scott County Board of Education’s construction of a new playroom at Huntsville Elementary. Per the resolution, originally adopted by the Scott County Board of Education on May 22, 2025, the project will feature the installation of wood flooring and the purchase of gymnasium equipment.
“It will be a full-functioning gym,” Bill Hall, Director of Schools, told attendees.
The complete project will cost $2,337,859, per the resolution passed by the Scott County Commission ($800,000, per annum, has already been budgeted as part of the Scott County School district’s current fiscal year and next). The totality of this figure will, however, exceeds mere construction and encompass the entirety of the project, start to finish. To culminate the funds, the Scott County Board of Education requested the project be funded through the Rural Capital Fund No 177, which bolsters educational projects within the community, thus requiring the permission of county government.
This request is not uncommon. Rural Capital Funds are typically designed to help fill the need for business and development capital in rural areas. It provides funds for the development, financing, and modernization of public developments and for management improvements.
A Knoxville-based company was rewarded the bid.
