“Thy kingdom come…” (Matthew 6:10, KJV)

Rev Dale Lee
Without some understanding of the kingdom of God we will live hung up in the briars. Pricked with uncertainties, snared by perplexities, annoyed by our inability to make any sense out of much of life. So where to begin? Scholars and students of the Bible teach us that the kingdom of God, his power and authority to rule and see that His will is done, is presented to us in three ways in Holy Scripture. First, God’s rule as King is eternal and universal. “The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19, NKJV) God’s kingdom is forever established in heaven and will never cease to be. Second, God’s kingdom is present at present in this world only in the hearts of those who have received Christ as their personal Savior. All others are slaves in an evil empire Third, God’s kingdom is approaching on the horizon, so to speak. This is the kingdom Jesus teaches us to pray for; God’s kingdom in full manifestation on earth including the releasing of blessings of heaven and the binding of all evil spirits. We live in the age of kingdom warfare and this makes prayer of the utmost importance. Dr. George Ladd reminds us that one of the fundamental presuppositions of the Bible is that there is a real and invisible spiritual world of both good and evil that impinges upon and determines human existence and destiny…This age is the time of sinfulness, evil, and rebellion against God; the age to come [the kingdom of God] will see the perfect establishment of God’s rule in the world and the purging of all sin, evil, and rebellion. So these three truths regarding the kingdom of God serve as a solid foundation for our faith. Many questions remain. How can we believe that God’s kingdom is eternal, universal and all-comprehending when evil rampages apparently without restraint? Good question. We will have to work hard for understanding. For now, we start with obedience to this amazing teaching of Jesus. Father, release the power of Your mighty arm and bring in fullness and glory Your kingdom upon this earth. This request will certainly be answered and in the glorious future of the children of God we will be happy to declare we prayed our part in the coming of God’s kingdom.
