ONEIDA — The first of two new buildings at Tennessee College of Applied Technology Oneida/Huntsville’s Oneida campus is now well underway, slated to be completed just after the start of the fall trimester later this year.
At a biweekly construction meeting on campus Tuesday morning, contractors provided an update on progress that is being made on the new building. Work began on the new building, situated on the northeast corner of campus, in early fall. Since that time, construction crews have completed their concrete work and have erected the exterior block walls, as well as almost all of the interior block walls. A pad is currently being built to support the weight of a crane that will be needed to place roof trusses.
The new building is slated for completion on Oct. 18, 2025, though that date will be dependent on the weather. Once finished, it will house TCAT Oneida/Huntsville’s Power Line Construction & Maintenance program, Truck Driving program, and Diesel-Powered Equipment Technology program.
The building currently housing the diesel program will continue to be used. It also houses TCAT’s Criminal Justice, Nursing Aide and Emergency Medical Technology programs.
The new lineman/diesel building is just one of two currently under construction on the Oneida campus. Site preparation continues for the second building, which is located on the south side of the campus and is the project passersby see from Eli Lane and Burchfield Avenue. The second building will host TCAT’s Building Construction Technology and Industrial Maintenance – Mechatronics programs.
Along with a new higher education campus in Jamestown that will be used jointly by TCAT Oneida/Huntsville and Roane State Community College, the projects are part of more than $20 million in new construction made possible by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and the General Assembly as part of their commitment to technical education in the Volunteer State.
TCAT’s Oneida campus was originally built in 1967. Following construction of the Huntsville campus 30 years later, most programs left the Oneida campus and it even briefly closed from 1999 until 2001. One program was offered at the Oneida campus from 2001 to 2005, but it has since grown to include nine programs, as well as Adult Education and the local career center.
