“Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.” (John 5:33, KJV)
Jesus Christ was “full of grace and truth.” (John1:14) What are we full of? Jesus declared to Pilate that “for this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.” (John 18:37) To what do we bear witness? John the Baptist bore witness to the truth regarding the Lord Jesus. Do our words and lives bear witness to Jesus? Or would others be shocked to find out we claim to be Christians?
The world is desperately looking for truth whether they know it or not. The religious leaders in the days of John the Baptist sent unto John to find out his testimony regarding the truth about Jesus. John bore witness to the truth. And it cost him everything. Yet he did not cower in fear when the test came, he bore witness to the Truth Himself. Do our words and lives bear witness to the truth, to the Lord Jesus? Would others be surprised to discover we claim to be followers of Jesus because they have never heard nor seen any evidence?
Mark Twain wrote that a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. The father of lies would deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh and made redemption possible for guilty souls. But it is true. The father of lies would deny the second coming of Jesus to take over leadership of the earth but all the evidence points to this truth. The father of lies tells us we can live as we please with little or no consequence. But the truth is that we are accountable to Jesus Christ to Whom God has given all judgment. (John 5:22)
John bore witness unto the truth. God help us to cast off the works of darkness and deception and clothes ourselves in Light and Truth. Help us to always be ready to give an answer for the hope we claim. Help us to bear witness to the truth no matter what. Amen.
