Hooked on Fun: 85 Local Kids Reel in Big Memories in Oneida

On Saturday, June 6, children from across Scott County gathered at Oneida City Park for the annual Oneida Free Fishing Day. Designed to encourage children to explore the great outdoors, the morning invited kids ages 3 to 15 to drop a line and enjoy friendly competition without needing a fishing permit.
The event kicked off at 8 a.m. with registration and a free breakfast provided by Casey’s. Sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the Town of Oneida, the park lake was buzzing with excitement as parents, volunteers, and children worked together to secure the perfect spot on the bank.
“Fishing day is one of the most fun events for the town and all its employees. We love to come out and see kids catching fish and the big grins on their face when they win prizes,” Oneida Mayor Lori Phillips-Jones stated.
At 11 a.m., judges measured and weighed the day’s biggest and longest catches. Prizes were awarded across multiple age groups (3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and 13-15) for the longest fish. Other prizes were given out for categories like most fish caught.
Even after the contest concluded, families stuck around to enjoy the Oneida City Park and all it has to offer. If you missed out on this year’s casting competition, children ages 15 and younger can still fish for free all week long in Tennessee’s public waters. Grab your rods, reels, and bait, and get out to the water!
