Dear Editor:
My name is Matthew Phillips Jr, an Eagle Scout from BSA Troop 333 of Scott County. I recently completed by Eagle Scout Service Project, which involved building a Flag Retirement Box and a Flag Retirement Ring for the VFW Post 5669. This massive undertaking would not have been possible without the overwhelming generosity of our community. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who donated their time, money, and materials to make this project a reality.
I want to express my gratitude to Town of Oneida, Mayor Lori Phillips-Jones and the Board of Aldermen: Rick Harper, Mark Byrd, Dakota Smith, and Jeff Tibbals for giving me this opportunity.
To Commander Brian Wagaman and the great members of the VFW for guiding me in the direction to get permission to build the Flag Retirement Ring.
A special thank you to – 27 Supply, Ace Hardware, Lumber King, Winco, and West Ready Mix for their contributions of materials. A tremendous thank you to Ashley Risden, Tiffany Jeffers, Ginger Reynolds, Jerried Jeffers, Tammie Burchfield, Rena Erwin, Donnie Phillips, Ronnie Phillips, Gabe Krahn, Dennis Jeffers, Felicia Bilbrey, Mike Swain, Dwight Murphy, Scarlett Ellis, and UCB Bank for their generous contributions of funding.
I want to sincerely thank Scout Master Stephen West and Commander Brian Wagaman for their guidance and support and to the volunteers from Troop 333, my family and friends, for their hard work and support on our building day.
Together, we were able to build and create a space to retire worn and tattered flags, fulfilling the requirement of the US Flag Code which recommends burning worn out flags in a dignified method. The project will serve Scott County for years to come.
Thank you all again for your overwhelming support, generosity, and belief in me.
