The Plateau Players Bring Shakespeare in Love to Oneida This February 13-22
Oneida, TN — The Plateau Players proudly present Shakespeare in Love (The Play), based on the Academy Award®-winning screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard and adapted for the stage by Lee Hall. Performances will take place at the Black Box Theater inside Oneida’s Christian Care Center on:
• Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 p.m. on February 13, 14, 20, and 21
• Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. on February 15 and 22
This witty, romantic, and fast-paced play imagines a young William Shakespeare at the beginning of his career—penniless, in debt, and paralyzed by writer’s block. His fortunes change when he meets Viola de Lesseps, the spirited daughter of a wealthy merchant whose fierce love of poetry and theater inspires her to secretly pursue her dream of acting in a world that forbids women on the stage.
Their passionate love affair unfolds against a backdrop of rival producers, mistaken identities, theatrical chaos, and royal interference. When Viola’s father promises her hand in marriage to the pompous Lord Wessex in exchange for a noble title, the stakes rise dramatically. As opening night of Shakespeare’s new play—and Viola’s wedding day—loom ever closer, life and art collide in a race toward an unforgettable conclusion.
Director Ralph Trieschmann says, “We are so excited to see so many wonderful local actors and actresses from Scott, McCreary, and Morgan counties join together to celebrate theater and to bring this approachable version of a Shakespeare tale to our community. We hope audiences will love seeing it as much as we loved putting it together—what better way to enjoy Valentine’s Day than with a love story?”
Filled with humor, romance, swordplay, and theatrical magic, Shakespeare in Love celebrates the power of storytelling and the enduring mystery of love. At its heart is the creation of one of the world’s most famous tragedies, Romeo and Juliet, born from a love that dares not last.
