Families from multiple counties crammed the McCreary County Public Library on Saturday for a celebration that blended imagination with literacy and the kind of dose of community spirit that the library has long become associated with. This event marked Take Your Child to the Library Day in conjunction with the Whitley City institution’s 3rd Annual Superhero Saturday Training Academy.
The core of the event is Take Your Child to the Library Day (TYCLD), an international, annual event held on the first Saturday of February. Established to highlight the vital role libraries play in children’s education and development, the day encourages families to discover the free books, programs, and resources available in their local libraries. Across the country – and, in fact, the world – libraries, like MCPL, host special activities designed to make reading exciting and accessible for their youngest patrons.
McCreary County’s celebration delivered exactly that. In fact, it’s the very kind of thing that the library has become well-known for across Kentucky and neighboring Tennessee.
Children – some dressed as superheroes themselves – arrived to find their favorite comic and film heroes, ready to assist in library programs, as patrons were offered themed crafts, games, and hands-on activities that transformed the library into a training ground for “junior superheroes.” Special guests Batman, Superman, Hulk, and Super Mickey made appearances, posing for photos and reminding kids that even heroes rely on knowledge.
Programming Coordinator Holly Daugherty said the day’s mission goes beyond fun. “TYCLD is an international, annual event on the first Saturday of February that encourages families to explore local library resources,” Daugherty told SCN. “Even Superheroes know the importance of reading and using your library. The day was filled with superhero crafts, games and so much more.”
The event drew community supporters from Scott and McCreary Counties, including SCN’s Ruthie Mullett and local author Jean Davenport Niles, who recently published the book, “Past Due.”
From capes and masks to literature and laughter, the library buzzed with the energy of an excited community, in an event that may prove that a real superpower ID comes in the form of a library card.
