John Jefferies/Jeffers (1740-1830’s)
One of Scott County’s first families
Raymond Jeffers (descendant of William Jeffers) was the son of Luther and Della (Duncan) Jeffers, born April 9, 1918 he attended Lincoln Memorial University for three years and earned his B.S. Degree from Tennessee Technical University and his M.S. Degree from the University of Tennessee. He spent more than 35 years in the field of education from principal to teacher to Superintendent of Schools from 1968 to 1972, and was a Justice of the Peace for about 20 years. He married Florena Lawson and they had three children Donald Ray who married Zelma Strunk, Donald Ray Jeffers was elected and served as a School Board Member in the 1970’s, Diana who married Gary Stanley and Lynn who married Hal Ward. Raymond Jeffers died December 21, 1979 and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery.
William Frazier Jeffers (son of Emsley Jeffers) was born October 26, 1890 and received his education from the Acres school and Buffalo High School in Scott County he attended East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tennessee. He began teaching around 1916 and taught in a one room school called Buffalo Bridge for about ten years after he lost his hearing he retired from teaching school and then began farming and running a grist mill near where the Buffalo Bridge Church stands now. Frazier had three daughters who at some point in their lives were school teachers. Clara who married Onvey West taught at Winona, Smokey Creek, Bairds Creek, Buffalo High School and Five Black Gum. Bertha who married Ortel Duncan taught school at Cappuchine and Winfield Elementary. Alma who married Paul Burdsall taught at Cappuchine for a couple of years. Frazier married Emily J. Duncan and they had eight children and they were; Clara, William “Jim High” married Evelyn Laxton, Bertha, Alma, Calvin, Oma who married J.L. Newport, Elsie who married John Fitzgerald, Hazel who married Wendell Richardson.
James Dennis Jeffers (a great-grandson of Frazier Jeffers) was elected in 2016 and is currently serving as the Mayor for the Town of Huntsville. He is the son of James Burl and Charlotte Jeffers and is married to Amy Lawson their children are; Lindsay, Shelby and Dylan.
David Ray Jeffers (a great-grandson of Frazier Jeffers) was elected in 2010 to the County Commission and is currently serving his second nonconsecutive term. He has written the book “Veterans of Scott County” that spotlights veterans entirely from Scott County and is the current President of the Scott County Historical Society. He is the son of Estel and Linda (Gibson) Jeffers. He was married to Tammy Phillips and is currently married to Florena Carroll. David’s children are as follows; Davin (deceased 1984) Becky, Davey, Terence, Monica, Carrie and Alex.
Throughout the years since 1852 after Robert G.H. Jeffers was elected during the first official election in Scott County there has been seven consecutive generations who have served proudly in the military in loca politics as ministers and as teachers in Scott County, Tennessee.
