Sheriff launches “Warmth of Webb” heating assistance

A multitude of things can cause heating problems in Tennessee homes. In Northeast Tennessee, where winters can get particularly cold, that issue is often related to exorbitantly high heating prices, an issue that continues to plague families across the country. While there are no specific number of those impacted, many families in and around Scott County are forced – or choose – to find alternative heating. As a result, many will heat their homes with wood burning stoves, wood burning heaters, and fireplaces.
In a launch particularly close to their hearts, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office looks to combat that issue and help with wood heating necessities for those families facing struggle this winter season. This month, Sheriff Brian Keeton launched “The Warmth of Webb” initiative, designed to provide free firewood to families in need.
The program was inspired by an inmate, Carlos “Doug” Webb, who grew up in a home where warmth was not always a guarantee.
“Doug wanted to ensure no family faced winter without heat,” the sheriff said. “His idea also follows the wonderful success Morgan County has had with similar efforts, which helped shape and encourage this program.”
Webb had intended to begin the program last winter, but due to an unexpected health crisis and the demands the program could meet, he was forced to delay the start, but despite the obstacle, he never stopped wanting to help, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. This year, operating in Webb’s honor, the program moves forward. It will do so with the full support of Keeton, Captain Amy Lay, and the inmates who were closest to Doug Webb, all of whom look to make “The Warmth of Webb” a Scott County success story.
Families in need of firewood should contact the Scott County Jail, Monday through Sunday, between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
