John Jefferies/Jeffers (1740-1830’s)
One of Scott County’s first families
Jasper Jeffers (son of Robert G.H. Jeffers) was born April 1, 1843 and was a Corporal in the 11th Tennessee Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted June 1862 for 19 months. He was married to Elizabeth Newport and their children were; Fealin who married Dessie Sexton, Berry who married Indianapolis Sexton, Mary who married William R.
Burchfield, Monroe N/A, Jasper married Cansada Brown, Martha married MD Lawson, Esau married Martha York. Jasper died May 7, 1901 and was buried at the Jeffers Cemetery in the Byrges Creek community in Scott County.
Daniel Jeffers ( grandson of William Jeffers) was the son of David and Phaeba (York )Jeffers was a member of the homeguard in Scott County during the Civil War. He was born in Huntsville September 6, 1837 and was married to Sarah Hembree, daughter of Meshack and Martha (Carroll) Hembree. Daniel was an attorney in Scott County, the children of Daniel and Martha Jeffers were; Almira married James Lay, Martha married Joseph Houck, Alvis married Martha Foster, Eleander N/A. Leonard married Irene Pemberton, Ethel married Winfield Harness, Ella married William E. York, Elvin married Prentie Keeton and Otis married Georgia Baker. Daniel Jeffers died May 28, 1909 and is buried in Huntsville, Tennessee.
Pleasant Jeffers (son of Archibald Jeffers) was born about 1838 and was Private in the 49th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. He was married to Charlotte and their children were; Archibald who married Mary Adkins, Nancy who married Larkin Bowling, Sarah and Kissiah.
Rev. L. Maynard Jeffers (son of James Henry Jeffers) was born December 19, 1896 and married Della Humphrey. He attended elementary school at Buffalo and graduated from Huntsville High School and attended college at East Tennessee State. He served more than 20 years a school teacher and principal in various schools in Scott County including Huntsville, New River, Pemberton and Black Creek. He was elected as Scott County Clerk in 1932 and served in that capacity for several years. He was a Baptist minister. The children of Maynard and Della (Humphrey) Jeffers were; Claude who married Iris Blakley, Velma who married Sherman Walker, James who married Faye Rose, Mary Helen who married Stanley Walker, Janis who married Dale Freels and Vivian who married Bill Bowling.
Dillard Jeffers (son of Emsley Jeffers) was born March 15, 1894 and worked as a saw mill operator for most of his life. He was elected as Justice of the Peace in 1920 and held that position off and on through 1954. Dillard first married Sylvania Cross and they had three children; Simon, Carley and Anna Mae. He secondly married Flona Laxton a life long school teacher who taught in various schools throughout the county including Buffalo Bridge elementary school until its closing in 1961. their children were; Reba who married Herman Russell and Cassie Faye who married Bud Williams. They are remembered in this community for having community bible school or vacation bible school also they were known for their providing children and adults alike with clothing and other essentials.
