Second Harvest Food Bank Launches Hunger Action Month
September is Hunger Action Month and Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee is calling for Hunger Action Heroes to help Nourish the Future. During this month-long campaign, Second Harvest will be raising awareness and inspiring action in our 18-county service area.
People can get involved locally through the following actions:
• Spread the word—Follow us on social media for ways everyone can support the fight against hunger. Remember to wear ORANGE on September 9th for Hunger Action Day, while tagging Second Harvest in your photos!
• Host a food drive—Food collection drives are vital in the fight against food insecurity. Gather friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors to collect shelf-stable goods, or consider a virtual food drive through our website.
• Volunteer—Our volunteers are crucial to the success of the food bank, donating more than 32,000 hours of their time, annually. This allows your food bank to distribute millions of pounds of food to East Tennessee communities.
With the rising cost of living continuing to present hardships for neighbors across our service area, now is a crucial time to support Second Harvest. Thank you to Delta Dental for serving as event sponsor for the entire month of September.
“In our service area alone, nearly 214,000 neighbors are food insecure, including 1 in 6 children,” says Elaine Streno, CEO of Second Harvest. “Hunger Action Month gives us a chance to take collective action by raising awareness, volunteering, and donating. Your time and your talents matter as we fight hunger and feed hope right here in East Tennessee.”
