Veterans at the local VFW Post 5669 marked the somber occasion of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, 2025. Scott County troops from Scouting America, American Legion Post #136, and County Mayor Jerried Jeffers were also on hand to remember the brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of freedom around the world. As part of the service, Pastor Virgil Gibson gave the invocation, John Beaty provided taps, and Philip Thompson performed the national anthem, following a welcome by Post Commander Brian Wagaman. The day’s guest speaker was the Rusty Washam family. First known as Decoration Day, the first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the lives lost in the War Between the States (1861-1865). The federal holiday is marked annually on the last Monday in May.
