Lady Highlanders Play for District Title
Oneida Boys and Girls compete in consolation games

By Shane Gilreath
In what surprised many sports fans, Oneida men’s basketball lived to play another day against Gatlinburg-Pittman, a school they had lost to twice in the regular season. With a drive indicative of their spirit, however, Oneida pulled the upset in the first round of the district tournament last week, earning a birth in the 1-2A District tournament.
Reliable Indians came through in the win, with Ben Gilbert producing a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Grady Keeton had a team high five steals, as Gatlinburg emitted 13 turnovers. Oneida closed strong, despite Gatlinburg rallying to get within three points several times in the second half.
Despite the impressive showing, Oneida eventually fell to Austin East, the number two seed, 66-47. The Lady Indians also faced AE, a familiar foe over the season. The Lady Indians defeated Austin-East 33-26 in the first round of the District tournament and guaranteed their place in the Region 1-2A tournament.
The Scott High Lady Highlanders were equally impressive, as they rolled in to the district tournament. The Lady Highlanders produced a tough win over Union County to advance to play in their first district championship in nearly 3 decades.
Scott High will play for the District Championship on Monday, February 24th against Anderson County, a team they’ve gone toe-to-toe with during the regular season, splitting those wins to guarantee the championship game will be a nailbiter for fans.
Scott County’s victory against Union earned the Highlanders the right to host a first-round game in the Region 2-3A tournament.
