HUNTSVILLE — Richard Haley, a student in Tennessee College of Applied Technology Oneida/Huntsville’s Building Construction Technology program, is the college’s nomination for the 2024 Tennessee Board of Regents’ Chancellor’s Commendation for Military Veterans.
Haley received the Chancellor’s Commendation at a special veterans luncheon at the Huntsville campus on Tuesday, Nov. 12, where TCAT Oneida/Huntsville also honored the rest of its veterans with a chicken-and-dumpling dinner.
Haley is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He served nine years in the USAF, with much of that time spent at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, where he worked on the Minuteman III weapon system. The Minuteman III is an intercontinental nuclear missile program.
Following his time in the Air Force, Haley met and married his wife, Terri. Following a stint at Hewlett Packard, he relocated with his family from Oregon to Stearns, Ky.
“I like to jokingly say that I took a blindfold and threw a dart at a board, and this is where I ended up,” Haley said.
With his wife operating a small business out of their home, making plushies and doing embroidery, Haley decided to enroll at TCAT Oneida/Huntsville. His son is a student in the school’s Automotive Technology program, and Haley took his advice to apply for admission.
“I do a lot of renovations and I wouldn’t mind doing some odd jobs here and there,” Haley said. “I just really wanted to learn some basic and residential construction, and this just seemed perfect.”
