The Bible tells us of Jesus during His trial and crucifixion is that He was a lamb, speechless before His shearers. We know that Jesus contained great power with His words. He had used His words to calm storms, raise the dead, caused demons to flee, and perform many other, marvelous acts.
Yet during His trial, surrounded by those who would mock and ridicule Him, He opened not His mouth. He had already declared that no man takes His life from Him, but that He lays it down willingly. He had told Pilate that Pilate did not have the power to crucify Jesus, but that it was given to him from above.
He had said that He had power to call down legions of angels at any moment to come to His aid. Yet during this time, He did not use that authority but willingly died on the cross for others. We do know that He spoke from the Cross such gracious words as,”Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” “This day you will be with Me in paradise.”
Yet, He did not call down the authority that would have brought Him down from the cross. Again, He was as a Lamb, speechless before those who would slaughter Him.
The wonder of this is the wonder of Grace. Grace, of course, is God’s unmerited favor given to us, even though we do not deserve it.
As a songwriter, penned, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.” That grace and mercy was on full display on the hill called Calvary. It is there that Jesus Christ took the humiliation of sin upon Himself, so that we could take the freedom of forgiveness upon ourselves. He was treated as unjust, even though He was just.
The Bible says it this way, “He has made Him to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in Christ.”
It was Jesus, Himself, who carried our sin so that we could be clothed in His righteousness. Yes, He was speechless before His shearers, but today, the message of Christ’s transforming grace is being proclaimed all over the world.
Thank God, He did not use His authority to come down from that cross, but hung there for our sins. What love, what mercy, what grace, what forgiveness, what majestic purpose have been revealed in the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He was oppressed, and He was afflicted. Yet, He opened not his mouth.
Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, He opened not His mouth.
