“Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. (Luke 19:11, NKJV)
James Agate (1877-1947) was an English journalist and drama critic. He wrote of himself: “I don’t know very much, but what I do know I know better than anybody, and I don’t want to argue about it. I know what I think…and am not interested in what anybody else thinks. My mind is not a bed to be made and remade.” To this we need to say: on some things, well ok. But if you are to be so confident in your own mind and knowledge, when it comes to eternal matters, you had better be infallible. But who of us is infallible in our thinking. We need help and our Lord promised us “when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…(John 16:13, NKJV)
After watching Jesus transform Zacchaeus on His way to Jerusalem, they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. They were wrong. Jesus wanted to correct their erroneous thinking. Unless we are infallible we may need correcting also. It would be most wise to ask the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.
The parable of the Ten Pounds or Ten Minas (Luke 19:11-27) is one we should be very familiar with. This teaching gives us a foundation for understanding God’s future plans and our present responsibilities. Here are some observations from this parable:
1. Our thoughts about God’s will and plan need to be submitted to the Holy Spirit continually until we have His assurance. We should be humble in doctrinal matters upon which there is disagreement.
2. The Holy Spirit will guide us into the truth if we seek and submit to Him.
3. Jesus entered into heaven as a Man and received the right to reign over God’s kingdom on earth when He sat down at the right hand of God.
4. Jesus will return and establish His kingdom on earth. Only in a general way can we know the times and seasons. The regathering of Israel in 1948 is seen by many to be a major sign of God’s plan for establishing His kingdom on earth.
5. Christians are accountable to do God’s kingdom business until the return of Jesus.
So, if you know what you think you know better than anybody else, and are not interested in what anybody else thinks, make sure as death, when it comes to God’s Word, you are right. Eternity is too long to be wrong.
