Plateau Players present bright star
PLATEAU PLAYERS PRESENT BRIGHT STAR–NOV 10-12, 2023 Black Box Theater at the Scott Christian Care Center Oneida, TN-After wowing audiences with Steel Magnoliasthis summer, members of the Plateau Players (Scott County’s community theatre group and member of the Appalachian Society of the Arts)are busy preparingits newest stage production,Tony Award-nominatedBright Star. Thistwo-act musical,set in the 1920s and 1940s Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina,retells an unlikely (but truth-inspired) story of young love, loss, and redemption. The showfeatures our region’s beloved bluegrass and mountain music. Written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the musical premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 2014 and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center in 2015. The showpremiered onBroadway in 2016and began its national tour in2017.Now, Bright Star wows audiences across the U.S. and Canadaunder licensing from Theatrical Rights Worldwide.Oneida native Glenda Tibbals Gray is directing the Plateau Players cast and crew, which features local talent,New Yorkperformer Samantha Connolly, and Atlanta-based actor Tony Smithey. After launching rehearsalsin early September, Gray(who earned a master’s degree in musical theatre from the Boston Conservatory of Music in 1996)says she couldn’t be happier with preparationsand is grateful for the cast’s hard work and dedication to the production. Local poet and dancer Cheyanne Leonardo is choreographing Bright Star’s dance scenes. LisaCotton and the Scott Christian Care Center’s staff and volunteers are assistingwith set construction and other logistics. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.
Intermission concessions will feature a biscuit bar and fizzy lemonade, both inspired by the show’s storyline. Theatergoersareencouraged to purchase tickets early as the performances are likely to sell out.
