A weekend accident claimed the life of a Scott County man when his UTV collided with a moving train at a
railroad crossing in Helenwood on Saturday. According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 5PM Saturday at the crossing merging Main Street and Hwy 27. Investigators said the driver, identified as Ronnie Lloyd, 52, failed to stop at the crossing before striking the train.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that Lloyd was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragic accident,” said Scott County Sheriff Brian Keeton, whose deputies responded to the scene. “It is especially heartbreaking for a family to experience such a loss during the holiday weekend. We ask our community to keep them in your prayers during this difficult time.”
The Independence Day holiday is traditionally known as one of the busiest and deadliest travel periods of the year, with increased traffic volume, impaired driving, speeding, and recreational vehicle use contributing to a higher number of crashes across the nation.
As of press time, authorities have not released any additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the Helenwood accident.
