Oneida Mayor Lori Phillips-Jones announced last week that her municipality would launch TextMyGov, a new text messaging service designed to make it easier for residents to stay informed and connected with local government. That service will officially begin on June 12, 2026, providing a fast, convenient, and reliable way for citizens to receive important information directly on their mobile phones, according to the mayor.
Nationally, where some 98% of households report cell phone usage, TextMyGov is recognized as a reliable platform for public outreach and to deliver timely updates. Through simple text messaging technology, citizens can receive notifications about community events, office closures, weather-related announcements, emergency information, public meetings, and other important town news without needing to search websites or social media for updates.
As part of the Oneida launch, residents may receive an introductory text message from the number 91896. Participation in the service is completely voluntary and is not required of any resident. Anyone who wishes to stop receiving messages may opt out at any time by simply replying STOP.
Oneida residents who do not receive the initial text can easily subscribe by texting the keyword “Oneida” to 91896. After sending the keyword, users will receive a confirmation message and must reply YES to complete enrollment. Once subscribed, they will begin receiving notifications regarding happenings impacting Oneida.
In addition to those general announcements, Phillips-Jones said the town is exploring ways to provide citizens with updates tailored to their interests. Residents who would like to receive specific types of notifications are encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Office and share their preferences.
The adoption of TextMyGov reflects Oneida’s ongoing commitment to improving communication through advancements in technology, as studies show that 68% of Tennesseans now live in a mobile-only household. By delivering information directly to those residents, Oneida hopes to provide a more responsive and convenient way for citizens to stay informed.
