Alive and Kicking: “Zombies!
A Musical Comedy” Hits All the Right Notes in Oneida

Over the past couple of years, the Plateau Players, under the Appalachian Society of the Arts, has put on several productions for Scott County. However, their latest venture, “Zombies! A Musical Comedy”, has broken new ground as a massive homegrown success. Written and composed by local talent, the original musical packed the theater, proving that the community has a strong appetite for fresh, creative storytelling.
Bringing an original production like “Zombies! A Musical Comedy” to life required months of dedication behind the scenes. When asked about the inspiration behind the script, playwright Ace Glaspy explained that the local talent made all the difference. “Since I was such a big part of how Plateau Junior Players came into existence and watching all these kids have so much fun, I thought it would be a really neat experience for them to be a part of something never before seen. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at writing a children’s play, and we all love
musicals. So two years ago I started brainstorming and the kids were really into zombies then so the thought struck me to create something to do with zombies, so I started writing. My vision was walking dead meets Westside story, but a G-rated version for kids. It took me the better part of two years to write it, but I’m really proud of it and seeing it brought to life by my wife and watching these kids have a blast and actually enjoy what I made is a priceless experience,” Glaspy said.
When asked what makes this play special, director Ashlee Glaspy explained that the youthfulness of the cast made all the difference. “It has been so exciting to direct an original musical written by my husband. While I may be a little biased, I’ve had the privilege of watching this show grow from an idea into a full production. What makes it special is its blend of comedy, music, and genuine heart. Our cast has brought tremendous energy and creativity to the stage. This was my first time directing a musical and my daughter, Michaelan, was my assistant so it has been an extra special experience. I’ve watched these young actors loosen up on stage and have a blast, bringing everything they’ve got to our audiences. It has been pure joy having the privilege to not only direct my husband’s work, but to also get to work with these 25 very talented young actors,” Glaspy said.
From creative costumes and make-up designs to original catchy songs and dance, productions like “Zombies! A Musical Comedy” can be a reminder that talent can be found in many places, even the youth.
