Court Approved Contract For Erection Of Building
Contract awarded to John A. Johnson & Sons, Inc., and work is to start at Once on Modern New Courthouse
Scott County Quarterly court met in special session at Huntsville last Saturday for the purpose of selling Courthouse bonds and awarding the contract for the building. Court was called to order at ten O’Clock by Sheriff Frank Butler and after a few remarks by County Judge Roscoe Byrd, the official call for the session was read by Clerk L.M. Jeffers. General Howard H. Baker, chairman of the Building Committee spoke to the court on the matter of selecting a contractor for the new building and the actions of the committee regarding this meeting. The court approved the letting of the contract to the John A. Johnson & Sons, Inc., for the sum not to exceed $205,000 with any savings under $185,000 to be divided equally between the county and the contrac-tor. In addition to the architect, who will have the overall supervision of the construction, a local man will be employed as supervisor or checker to check all labor, time, material, and equipment of all kinds. Work is to start at once and it is expected to be completed within six or seven months. In a brief afternoon session Grover C. Pemberton was the low bidder on $225,000 bonds offered, buy-ing the bonds at par with an interest rate of 3 1/4 per cent. The county is fortunate by having a local man like Mr. Pemberton who saved the county several thousand dollars on these bonds. The vote, after due consider-ation was unanimous on all matters coming before the court with all 12 members present. The courthouse committee, who will look after the building of the courthouse composed of Roscoe Byrd, Maxwell Sexton, Howard H. Baker, C.W. Wright and Jerry W. Thompson.
