Byrd sentenced to 20 years in penitentiary
Following his three-day trial which began on August 6, 37-year-old Casey Preston Byrd of Oneida, Tenn., has been sentenced for the murder of London Police Sergeant Logan Medlock, who was pronounced dead at the scene of a DUI-related crash that occurred nearly two years ago in October 2022.
Mayor Randall Weddle and other officials were present Monday in the courtroom, when Laurel Circuit Judge Gregory Lay accepted the recommendation and verdict of the Warren County jury over Byrd’s trial.
Those jurors found the Tennessee man to be guilty of murder, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants; and recommended Byrd face a sentence of 20 years of confinement in the penitentiary for his crimes. No form of alternative release was requested, as Byrd was not believed to qualify.
The incident which Byrd is charged for took place at the intersection of Barbourville Street (KY 229) onto South Main Street in London at about 1 a.m. on October 30, 2022. The crash involved two vehicles — Byrd’s Dodge Ram wrecking into the driver’s side of Medlock’s police cruiser, resulting in the vehicles straying off of the roadway and into A.R. Dyche Cemetery.
It was revealed in Byrd’s preliminary hearing that he was driving 51 mph in a 35 mph zone and running a red light when his truck struck the police cruiser that Medlock was operating. The hearing also made it known that he smelled strongly of alcoholic beverages, with a high blood alcohol level of .293. Also found in his possession was a substance that was presumed to be Methodone.
At press time, Byrd remained lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
