Roger Hoyal Jeffers

June 10, 1940 ~ May 4, 2024 (age 83)

Roger Hoyal Jeffers

Roger Hoyal Jeffers, age 83, of Oneida, TN, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the University of Tennessee Hospital.  Born June 10, 1940, in Scott County, TN, he was the son of the late James Hoyal and Eula Jean DeBord Jeffers.  He was a member of the New Haven Missionary Baptist Church.

Roger was the oldest of five children, and in his 83 years there are plenty of yarns to be told.  After graduation from Oneida High School, he attended TN Tech and the University of Tennessee where he obtained his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Robert Shaw of Knoxville was the beginning of jobs and travels that he loved so much.  He was most proud of having had a part in the creation and design of the Boeing 747 while living in Seattle, Washington.  He wound up in Baton Rouge, LA, driving to New Orleans to work on jobs for the Job Corp.

Upon retirement, he loved traveling North, South, East and West in his motorhome, and had visited most of the states.  But his greatest love was dancing.  He could line dance and boogie with the best of them, but he was known from far and wide for ballroom dancing, and his ability to glide a lady across the floor with grace and poise.  From Oneida, to Knoxville, down to Baton Rouge and New Orleans, he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother:  Randy Lee Jeffers and wife Etta Marie Blankenship Jeffers; grandparents:  John Burlin and Kizzie Ann Duncan Jeffers, and Tyler and Mossie Lee Davis DeBord.

Roger is survived by his children:  Roger Craig Jeffers, Nicole Lea Welch and husband Tommy of Arkansas, and Kendra Gail Wells and husband Richard of Baton Rouge; grandchildren:  Alexis and Claire Welch, McKenzie, Everett, Aaron and Rylee Lasseigne, Patricia Faye D. Deocareza, Myrtle Paige D. Deocareza and Jonas Craig Anthony Deocareza, Tim and Hannah Wells and Sarah Taff and husband Steven; great grandchild:  Nova Riley; siblings:  Terrie J. Cross, Doris J. Clayton and husband John, and Cathy J. Burke; several nieces and nephews; as well as other family members and friends.

The family would like to extend heart-felt thanks and gratitude to the doctors who were so kind to Roger during his six-year survival of Lymphoma.  He knew without your expertise he would have succumbed much earlier.  They include Dr. Wahid T. Hanna of the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and Dr. Steven Josh Thompson of the Thompson Clinic, and each member of their staff, as well as many other doctors he saw over the years.  It meant a lot to him and all his family, and you will not be forgotten.

Friends may visit with the Jeffers family from 11:00 a.m. until time of a Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, in the Chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Thomas Nelis Obituary

Thomas Raymond Nelis (73), of Oneida, TN left to be healed by his heavenly father on May 30th 2024 at his home in Oneida, Tennessee. Tom was born to Russell and Grace Nelis in Beech Grove, Indiana on November 10, 1950. He was the oldest of six children raised by his parents and he relished his position as the oldest. Being the oldest, Tom was determined to always care and protect his siblings and family. This was a virtue he carried throughout the entirety of his life. Tom graduated from Southport High School in 1969.

He later married the love of his life Robin Watkins in November 1973. Throughout their glorious years together Tom and Robin had three sons; Jason, Christopher, and David. Tom worked as a truck driver for both Overland Transportation and Holland Trucking. Where, he eventually retired from Holland in 2010 after 35 years as a Teamster 135. Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman. Some of his best times were hunting the woods and fishing on lakes with friends and family. Tom participated in many tournaments with the Indy Bass Club and proclaimed there was nothing more exciting and frustrating than early start times racing to a prime location, hooking a fish, and then losing said fish or even better – never getting a single bite.

Tom’s memory, whit, and charm will be carried on by those he has left behind. He is survived by his wife Robin, his sons Jason (Erin), Chris (Emily) and David (Brooke); his grandchildren Cyler (Nelis), Corinne (Nelis), Dylan (Nelis), Cody (Beal), Liam (Nelis), Madison (Nelis), Chase (Nelis), and Maverick (Bowling); his siblings Charlene (Rick), Mike “Tony” (Terri), and Samantha (Harold); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

While we are heartbroken with his departure, we take solace in knowing that he is reunited with those who are waiting for him: his father Russell (1989), his mother Grace (2009), his sister Diana (2005), his brother David (2024), and his nephew Jordan (2016).

A Visitation will be Thursday, June 6th from 5 to 7 PM at Jessen Funeral Home & Simple Cremation in Whiteland, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one of two different charities in Tom’s honor: Catch-A-Dream Foundation (https://www.catchadream.org), Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation (https://huntofalifetime.org) or you can assist in the start-up of a new charity In The Moment Outdoors (https://gofund.me/8bac76f3).
