Man killed near recreation area

By Shane Gilreath

A police chase on the KY 914 Bypass led to the apprehension of William Shadoan, a suspect in the murder of an elderly McCreary County man at Barren Fork, a popular Recreation Area in the Daniel Boon National Forest.
A popular recreation area in McCreary County was the scene of an unexpected crime on March 16th, when a 911 call alerted the McCreary County Sheriff’s office to an incident near Barren Fork Coal Camp and Mine Archeological District, an NRHP designated tourist area and popular walking spot for locals. Upon arrival, 87-year-old Roland Sumler was found lying in the road with a civilian providing aid in an effort to stop bleeding from multiple stab wounds. McCreary County K-9 Deputy Alex Jones and Deputy Ryan Jones were the first on scene and were able to restore a pulse. According to the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office, Sumler was transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in nearby Somerset, KY, where he succumbed to his injuries.
An alert was issued for the victim’s vehicle, which was later located by Kentucky State Police, but the vehicle fled the scene. KSP pursued the suspect, 51-year-old William Shadoan, before he wrecked out on the 914 Bypass in Pulaski County. Responders were then able to apprehend Shadoan, who was transported to the University of Kentucky with non-life-threatening injuries. Shadoan was charged with First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Robbery.
The Kentucky State Police are investigating related charges in Pulaski County.
