My Saturday stroll in Oneida

Have you noticed how weekends have a way of slowing down life in Scott County? There’s food, friends, and heritage abounding around every corner. When my friend sent me a text to meet them at ‘the barn’ for lunch, I was game to go. You know “The Barn” off Big Springs Road. If you don’t know it, you should. When you enter the “Big Red Barn,” you see a sign that says, “Family where life begins and love never ends.”
If you haven’t visited, they do have a great lunch – Saturday’s only. The special was meatloaf, mashed potatoes, peas, and a drink, and as tempting as that was, being a lover of dumplings, I went for the dumping’s and cornbread. Add to that a glass of ice cold southern sweet tea or lemonade, and nothing quite says home as much.
After you have your belly full of a great meal and hearts full of down home hospitality (and ultra-friendly servers), don’t hurry off. You can find countless gift items in the barn to complete a weekend day with local shopping – lots of homemade soaps, and lotions for starters. Stick around and browse for a while and you just may just leave with something you didn’t know you needed. You can find fresh vegetables, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, and more. Go out to the back porch where you will find inside the backroom large numbers of homemade bread, candies, jam, jelly, molasses, homemade banana pudding, and cakes. I cannot leave out the fresh eggs and homemade butter. Beautiful gardens and the memories of days gone by in the past. It was the perfect example of why local Saturdays don’t have to be full of excitement, when meandering through the area might just do the trick. Get out and enjoy the scenery!
