The facility formerly known as Pioneer Community Hospital of Scott is now Big South Fork Medical Center following a Facebook campaign soliciting suggestions from the community.
"I have been a part of this community for over three years now and it's encouraging that the new owner for this hospital wanted the community to take lead in naming it. This shows early on their intention to support us. This name represents our market very positively," said hospital administrator Tony Taylor in a press release. "We are very appreciative to the community for participating and naming the facility, as this is more than just a building that sits on a hill. We are part of the community, we are here for you."
In December 2016, Florida-based Rennova Health received approval to purchase the hospital's assets and debts out of bankruptcy after previous operator Pioneer Healthcare declared bankruptcy and abruptly shuttered the facility in July 2016.
This is Rennova's first venture into operating a hospital.
There were more than 150 responses to the Facebook inquiry with several people simply suggesting "Scott County Hospital" as it was known when the facility first opened. More than 20 people were in favor of using a form of "Big South Fork" in the hospital's name. A committee of chamber of commerce members then took a vote. Other names up for consideration included the use of "highland," "Cumberland," or "plateau."
Hospital management anticipates that there will be several announcements made as the core management team works toward reopening the hospital. It is uncertain as the exact date for reopening due to the various approvals, licenses, and payer enrollment requirements, officials said in a press release.
"The reopening of Scott County Hospital is a day our business community has anxiously awaited for the past eight months. The benefits of the hospital's reopening will extend well beyond the obvious, which is our residents having access to quality health care close to home. Community hospitals are vital to the economic health of rural communities like ours. The new hospital will play a vital role in Scott County's efforts to recruit new industry and sustain our existing small business community. Thank you to Rennova Health and Mr. Tony Taylor for their faith in Scott County, their investment into our community, and their diligent efforts to quickly work through the process of breathing new life into our hospital," said Ben Garrett, Chamber of Commerce President.
The facility is expected to fill up to 80 fulltime positions with another 80 needed part time or on an as-needed basis. A web portal to submit job applications online is expected to open March 1.
